BCC Basic Netiquette

Welcome to the BCC Online Classroom Environment! Just as there are things that you would or would not do in a physical classroom, there are similar things to follow in the online environment.

Protect private information

  • Do not share your password with anyone
  • Be sure to log out of all programs and the computer when you are finished
  • Do not click on links in unsolicited emails
  • Do not put anyone's personal information online - including yours!
  • Never send passwords via email or other online media

Overall Expectatons

  • Respect everyone and everyone's opinions
  • Write/speak professionally by using correct grammar and spelling as well as avoiding slang and texting abbreviations
  • Where possible, do not use all caps, and, to help avoid misunderstandings, do not use sarcasm
  • Before posting in a discussion forum or sending an email, read it to ensure it is clear and concise. Avoid ambiguity
  • Appropriately quote and cite any information from an outside source

Email and Discussion Forums

  • Use your college email to communicate with your instructors and anyone else at the college
  • Include approrpriate information in the subject line of an email (course number and section, subject, etc.) Don't just say HELP
  • Write/speak professionally by using correct grammar and spelling as well as avoiding slang and texting abbreviations
  • Do not use all caps, and, to help avoid misunderstandings, do not use sarcasm or insults
  • When writing, stay on topic and off the people
  • Before posting in a discussion forum or sending an email, read it to ensure it is polite, clear, and concise. Avoid ambiguity
  • Be sure the author intended for the message to be shared before forwarding it - it may not be for general distribution!
  • In forums, listen to eachother's points of view, recognizing that there may be disagreement
  • Read forum prompts carefully. Make sure you include all the points requested in your post
  • Make replies to posts meaningful. Add to the discussion; don't just say "I agree"
  • Always be respectful
